□ Name: Cain Christopher Hargreaves
□ Journal: cantarella
□ Series: Count Cain by Kaori Yuki
□ Canon point: The conclusion of Castrato Judas Kiss
□ History: here.
□ Personality: To put it lightly, Cain Hargreaves is eccentric. Childish but clever, morbid, charming and extremely perceptive, he finds a joy in digging into the darker sides of his Victorian London--rape, torture, murder, the occult--that’s almost creepy in its intensity. He loves to solve whatever puzzles he can get his hands on, and the more gruesome the better; this illustrates his psychological resilience, as he chose to bring justice and closure to the victims of the crimes that seem to follow him, and manages to do so without sinking into depression or anxiety. His ability to spring back from trauma is remarkable--although he can be bratty, arrogant, and even selfish in tough situations, his head stays clear and his judgments rational.

This isn’t to say he’s without pain, or even that he’s stable. He has issues, most of them related to emotional vulnerability; he’s not good at verbalizing his feelings and often acts callous and sarcastic to keep people at a distance. He’ll feign disaffect, preferring to appear as though there’s nothing wrong and he’s got everything under control, although this doesn’t always work on the people closest to him, especially Riff and his uncle Neil--both of whom care about him deeply and can read him better than he might like to admit. He tends to lash out when they push him; with Riff, who responds to his tantrums with unending patience and compassion, he will eventually admit to his fear or upset and allow himself to be comforted.

Even after all of the horror and abuse Cain has been through, he loves very deeply and can be very affectionate and doting once someone becomes close to him--especially with his little sister Merryweather, over whom he’s protective to the point where he can become stifling. He is possessive as well, particularly with Riff; these behaviors are not so much out of a desire to control others as they are a fear of loss, innocent and almost childish in its purity. Like any survivor of emotional abuse and neglect, Cain is very needy and yet easily placated. He craves the love that Merry and Riff give him, and clings tightly to them.

For all his emotional difficulties and penchant for drama, Cain is still self-aware and realistic. He knows his father’s modus operandi, and is very good at acting in accordance to this. While it’s a constant struggle, Cain is never more than a step or two behind Delilah, and frequently he’s a few steps ahead. He’s intelligent and creative and very quick to adapt to new information and new circumstances, and he’s rarely if ever wrong. He is protective and possessive, but it’s not without good reason; he knows there are no limits to the crimes his father is willing to commit to hurt him, and his obsession with detail and wariness to the point that it resembles paranoia have saved the lives of his loved ones more than once.

Cain’s analytical skill is limited to fact and to possibilities within reality. Although he has a broad capacity for devotion, he’s insensitive and not particularly empathetic, and doesn’t mind playing with other peoples’ emotions in order to get a lead in a case or further his own goals in some way. His sense of morality is very personally skewed, his judgments quick and a little harsh, and he has no problem with hurting or even killing people if he thinks they deserve it--although he rarely does so directly. He’s manipulative, but his traps almost always require the person he’s targeting to walk into them as a result of their own moral flaws: selfishness, cruelty, greed. The end effects tend to be creatively vicious, even sadistic, and he takes genuine pleasure from the thought of his wires being tripped.

Less morbidly, he often uses his charisma and manipulation to get laid, charming flighty and usually very emotional young women with sweet talk and body language deliberately employed to make them swoon. He doesn’t care what happens to them in the morning--unless, of course, they meet a grisly end.

□ Age: Seventeen
□ Gender: Male
□ Appearance: Petite and extraordinarily pretty, Cain is known for multiple successful cross-dressing excursions along with being a lady-killer--but it’s noted that although his looks pass easily for a woman, he can’t speak or he’ll break the illusion as his voice is quite deep. He doesn't have much body fat or muscle, likely because of the neglect in his early childhood; his frailty and small stature are exacerbated if not directly caused by his inbred genetics. Like both parents, he has dark reddish-brown hair and a fair complexion, and his green eyes are tinted with gold--in this universe, a result of incest. His features are sharp and noble, and he bears a striking resemblance to his father. His back is heavily scarred with whip marks from the brutal, nightly beatings he received during his early life.

□ Abilities/Powers: Cain is exceptionally brilliant--genius, even--and keenly perceptive, which allows him to quickly sort through and solve the grisly mysteries that seem to follow him around. His memory is photographic and impeccable, and he has an extensive knowledge of poisons. He is also a gifted piano player--his little sister refers to him as a musical genius. He has latent psychic abilities: he is predisposed towards becoming possessed and the dead can communicate with him through dreams/dreamlike visions.

□ Personal Items: Clothing (black waistcoat, white shirt with a standup collar, white cravat, black trousers, black leather shoes), a jet earring in his left ear, a set of glass phials (empty), glass slides, a book of botany, a book of chemistry, a book of anatomy/medicine, a penny dreadful, and a cane with a small dagger concealed in the decorative handle.
